Made-to-measure pillow in Austria: where to buy and get measured
In Austria, you can get a made-to-measure Pillowise pillow through stockists, not through a webshop of our own. There you are measured using three measurements, and the stockist map shows you where that is possible near you.
What does ‘made to measure’ mean at Pillowise?
The term often suggests that every pillow is made individually. At Pillowise it is slightly different, and we would rather say so straight away.
Pillowise is a pillow made from 100% memory foam, produced in the Netherlands. It measures 55 x 35 cm and comes in six sizes. Each size has its own colour: pink, orange, green, blue, red and purple. An algorithm uses your body measurements to choose the size that suits you best.
‘Made to measure’ here means that your measurements decide which of the six sizes you get, rather than chance on a shop shelf. You can read more in Made-to-measure pillows: what that means at Pillowise.
Incidentally, many people in Austria say ‘Polster’ instead of ‘Kopfkissen’. They mean the same thing, and anyone searching for ‘Kopfpolster nach Maß’ ends up with the same question.
What does the right pillow height depend on?
On three things: your body, your sleeping position and your mattress.
- Body: shoulder width, neck circumference and neck length are different for everyone.
- Sleeping position: back, side or front. If you sleep on your side, you need more room for your shoulder than someone who lies on their back.
- Mattress: soft, medium or firm. On a soft mattress, your shoulder sinks in deeper than on a firm one.
A pillow fits when your head and cervical spine are in line and your shoulder has enough room.
To be honest, a pillow that fits is not a cure. It provides good support while you sleep, nothing more. If you repeatedly wake up with neck pain or other complaints, please have the cause checked by a doctor. We explain how to estimate the height in general in Calculating pillow height. You can read how to tell that a pillow does not suit you in Pillow too high or too low.
Where can you buy a Pillowise pillow in Austria?
Pillowise is available through stockists. These include chiropractors, physiotherapists, sleep specialists, wellness practices and specialist retailers. There is no webshop for private customers on pillowise.com.
The first step is therefore always to find a stockist. On the map under Stockists, you will find locations in Germany and Austria.
We cannot give you a general figure for the price. It is set by each stockist. It is best to ask them directly.
How does the measuring work?
The measuring does not take long and requires no specialist knowledge. The stockist takes three measurements with the Pillowise tape measure:
| Measuring point | How it is measured |
|---|---|
| Shoulder width | Around the curve of the back, with the tape measure not pulled tight |
| Neck circumference | Completely around the neck |
| Neck length | From the bottom edge of the ear to the shoulder point |
This is how the process works:
- Find a stockist. Look on the map for a stockist near you.
- Get measured. Your shoulder width, neck circumference and neck length are taken.
- Give your sleeping position and mattress. Both are factored into the selection, because on your side you need something different from on your back.
- Confirm your size. The algorithm chooses the best-fitting pillow. If the stockist has a display with all six pillows, you can try your size and, for comparison, another size.
The measuring is done on your body, not by feel or from a catalogue description. That is the core of Pillowise.
And if there is no stockist near you?
Then you can work out your size yourself first. For this there is PillowScan at scan.pillowise.com. You can use it on your mobile phone or via a QR code. The measuring tool page Taking measurements will also guide you through the three measurements step by step.
Please note that knowing your size and buying the pillow are not the same thing. You get the pillow itself through a stockist. With your size, though, you already know what to ask for.
What do you get with the pillow?
- Core made from 100% memory foam, produced in the Netherlands
- Cover with a moisture-regulating top layer made from Tencel and a bottom layer made from polyester, machine washable at 40 °C
- Materials certified to STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX
- 5-year guarantee on every Pillowise pillow; the conditions are set out in the guarantee terms
For when you are on the move, there is Pillow ToGo, a travel pillow measuring 34 x 35 cm. It offers the same support as the standard pillow, is available in all sizes and comes in a sturdy travel bag. For children aged 4 to 15, there is Pillowise Junior in three sizes. You can read what memory foam feels like and what to bear in mind regarding care and smell in Memory foam pillows.
Where does the idea for Pillowise come from?
From practice. Thijs van der Hilst trained as a physiotherapist in Breda and later specialised in neck and shoulder complaints. He could not recommend a suitable pillow to his patients with neck complaints. So he developed a measuring method himself that determines the right pillow with three measurements. Pillowise grew out of this, together with United Comfort Industries, who have been making ergonomic sleep products in their own factory in the Netherlands since 1990.
Our aim is simple: your pillow size should become as much a matter of course as your shoe size.
So: is it worth looking for a made-to-measure pillow?
If you sleep well with your current pillow and wake up relaxed in the morning, you do not need to change anything. A pillow that fits does not need replacing.
If, on the other hand, you have already tried several pillows and have never been sure which height is right, getting measured is a sensible way forward. It replaces guesswork with three measurements. It does not replace a medical assessment, though, if you have complaints.
